Description

This short route is an amazing way to stretch your legs after driving along the Haleakala Hwy. Use the parking area and head across the road to the Leleiwi Overlook Trail. Continue toward the edge of the rim where the trail ends at a wind shelter, overlooking the rocky landscape of the Wilderness Area.

This run heads through a boundary ecosystem between the subalpine shrubland below and the alpine cinder-desert above. This area is home to many endemic plant and insect species and even the rarely seen Hawaiian petrel ('ua'u), an endangered burrowing seabird that nests in the rocky cliffs.

Please stay on the trail and respect all signs and warnings.
