Watch for the gate and no trespassing signs and veer south towards the end for a really good view.

Overview

A simple and easy outing with access right off of highway 50. This route through the sage country is often dry and doable late into fall, and as early as mid-March.

Description

Go west on Highway 50 from Gunnison and just before you reach the Blue Mesa there's a sign on the right for Beaver Creek, turn here. There's a pretty big parking lot and a bathroom, plus picnic tables.

You'll see plenty of sagebrush and juniper along the trail.

The turn off for this trail is not marked so look at your GPS or you might miss the turn off.
It basically follows a drainage for a while after the junction. Then once you've been on it for a little while, you get a sense of where you're going and the trail gets easier to follow and more defined.

The trail climbs a bit and then meanders along in open sagebrush for a while until you get to some great viewpoints. There is no shade on this trail.

Sometime before the fence and no trespassing sign, cut left into the sagebrush and stay to the left of the fence until you reach the viewpoint. When you're done admiring the Blue Mesa and surrounding hills, reverse your route.

This is a nice easy trail with some good views of Blue Mesa, total round trip distance is about 3 miles with maybe 500' of elevation gain.

Flora & Fauna

Deer, coyotes, songbirds. Sage, juniper, grass.
