Visitor passes are $5 for adults and are valid for six days. Except for December 25, White Sands is open year round. Park hours vary throughout the year, generally from 8 am to 6 pm. Dunes Drive is occasionally closed due to missile testing at the adjacent range, blocking access to the trail. Weather closures occur on occasion as well. Hours and closure information can be found
here.
Description
This is a fully-accessible trail for strollers and wheelchairs as the trail is an elevated boardwalk. The boardwalk guides you into a delicate interdunal area and, ultimately, to a beautiful view at the top of a dune. Interdune areas are where all vegetation in the dune field originate.
This is the best area to get an up-close look at several of the wildflowers that thrive here, while preserving the park's resources. There are interpretive signs and benches positioned at different points along the boardwalk.
Flora & Fauna
The deserts of the Southwest are not all white sand and red rock! Along this trail, be on the lookout for Colorado Four O’clock, Desert Mentzelia, Globe Mallow and many other species. More info
