Overview

Link up three sections of the Salina Levee Trail for a gravel loop around the city.

This wide, flat, dirt path along the top of the Salina Levee isn't a destination, but if you're in town and want a walk or a run, this is the ticket. You can go quite a few miles with minimal road crossings, pleasant scenery, and an uncrowded smooth surface. Perhaps the most interesting section is that around Indian Rock, just north of Crawford Road.

Need to Know

Take caution at road intersections. Train tracks at the north end force users to use a street as a crossing.

Runner Notes

This is probably the best run on dirt for several miles. Enjoy it!

Description

To access the starting point, head south to the intersection of E Schilling Rd and S Ohio St. Head east and then southeast along the Salina Levee Trail, South section through open fields. After 2.25 miles, there is a parking area at the Salina Soccer Complex, which makes for an alternative starting point.

Continue north along the outskirts of town, enjoying the open sky views with many parks and additional parking areas along the way. At just over five miles, you'll arrive at Indian Rock Park, which is a great place to explore. Use the Salina Connector to continue onto the Salina Levee Trails, Northeast section along the river.

After 7.5 miles, cross the railroad tracks and Old Hwy 40 onto the final section. Salina Levee Trail, North bends around for close to four miles of path before ending at W North Street. You can take any number of streets back to the starting point and a direct route would be to continue east on W North Street until it hits N Ohio St, which connects to the south to E Schilling Rd.

History & Background

The trail was completed in 1995 after being awarded a Kansas Department of Transportation grant in 1993. It continues to be extended and is getting quite a bit longer than its original 3.1 miles and nearly circumnavigates the city now!
