Features Views

The Wedge is an epic destination run about 3 hours southeast of Salt Lake City. It consists of roughly 16 miles of trail on the edge of a Grand Canyon-like cliff. The trail is not technically difficult, but does have some rocks and roots and does get close to the cliff at times. You'll be rewarded with endless views the entire time.

Need to Know

This trail is best traveled in the Spring or Fall due to the extreme heat and lack of shade in the Summer.

Runner Notes

The trail is mostly hard packed with some sandy spots, and minimal rocks and roots with negligible elevation gain.

There are many ways to run this route, but the most common is to park at The Wedge Overlook and start running from there. Follow the trail for approximately 16 miles, where you'll end up on a road. Follow this road (make a left turn at the two major intersections) all the way back around to The Wedge Overlook for a total of 22 miles.

You can also do this run as an out-and-back for a 50k. There is a campsite at about the mid-point that serves as a nice place for a water drop, or you can start here and run one section of the trail as an out-and-back and then the other section as an out-and-back.

There are bathrooms and picnic tables at The Wedge Overlook, but no other services (such as water).

Flora & Fauna

This is a high desert landscape with minimal flora and fauna.

History & Background

The Wedge Overlook is one of the best scenic vistas in the state. You'll see a dizzying viewpoint of this fantastically eroded gorge. It overlooks the San Rafael River as it flows through the "Little Grand Canyon." From this vantage point you can view Sid's Mountain Wilderness Study Area, Window Blind Peak and the southern Buckhorn Wash area. From the Wedge, travel east or west for more spectacular adventures. This is the perfect area for drivers, ATV riders, cyclists or hikers.
