Description
The trail starts out through lush forest, initially with a very gentle gradient. After a third of a mile, the trail turns sharply southwest and the gradient picks up. You cross a creek at about 1 mile in a small area that is slightly more open. The trail then enters very dense forest as you tackle the first ridge. Views from the top of the ridge are mostly obscured by trees. You descend again steeply for a short while before crossing another creek. Ahead of you is a long and very steep ascent that sometimes requires careful treading
Reach the top of the second ridge at 2.5 miles. Excellent views across the Mildred Lakes Basin and the surrounding mountains await. Mount Lincoln is to your very left, straight ahead is Mount Cruiser, and to your right in the distance is Mount Skokomish. Descend again for a quarter mile until you reach Hamma Hamma River. The trail sharply turns left here and leads you to the first lake. Circling the lake for a quarter mile, the trail then heads southwest towards the uppermost lake. Magnificent mountain framed views abound.
