The Carlon Picnic Area cutoff is little more than a game trail used by fishermen as they look for great spots along the South Fork of the Tuolumne River, which meanders along the trail and you have to figure out how to cross as there is no bridge.
You can see the Big Oak Flat Road as it wanders through the forest. Imagine driving this road to get into Yosemite.
The trail breaks off to the left and climbs up the hillside so that you can get closer to the falls and have a better chance at getting to the top of the falls.
Hodgdon Meadow sits off to the right side of the trail as you follow the Big Oak Flat Road into the forest.
