Longer grasses can be found around the creeks in the winter and spring when there is more water flowing through the area.
Clouds hug the hills above the trail. The area is green due to it being winter and the rains providing moisture in this dry region.
Hiking along the bench trail, you follow the dry creek bed for a long time. The Chalone Creek is dry a lot of the year, but at other times it has water flowing in it.
The junction with the South Wilderness Trail.
The South Wilderness Trail starts by following the old fire road, so it's nice and wide to start.
The trail descends from the Bear Gulch area to the South Chalone Creek and Bench Trail. Its one of the better shaded trails in the park.
