Separation Point Fur Seal Colony [Suggest Edits]

Description

Visitors can explore the area surrounding this fur seal colony. From the rocky outcropping of Separation Point, you'll be able to watch the antics of the seals as they swim, sun bathe, sleep, and play in the crystal clear waters and along the rocky outcroppings. The Department of Conservation is also actively trying to establish a gannet colony at Separation Point - full size decoys and a loudspeaker are being used to try to entice the gannets from nearby Farewell Spit to move in. If there are gannets present, be sure to stay behind the roped off area and respect the nesting space.

Half-Day Run: From the Whariwharangi hut or campsite, the run is an easy morning outing along the Abel Tasman Coast Track. If you are starting from the parking lot in Wainui, it will be a longer outing so plan accordingly.
