Local Info
In general the canyonlands/mt-lakeway trail system is about 70 to 80% canopied (you are hiking in the shade) if you stick to the singletrack trails.
These trails are a true 'hidden gem' in the Austin hill country area. You won't find a better variation of beautiful scenery and singletrack terrains in a single trail system in or around Austin.
You can read more info about the Canyonland trails and their history at the Lakeway Canyonlands website:

This is a perfect "training arena" for trail runners and serious local hikers who want to get some good miles in without a lot of trail traffic and within convenient driving distance. The Austin chapter of the Sierra Club meets here regularly as well.
Mtn bikers, trail runners, outdoor walkers, and day hikers share these trails in harmony. You'll often be able to enjoy zero trail traffic once you are into the deeper canyon sections. Mtn bikers tend be cleared out by later morning.
Cell phone reception is good through the entire system from Trophy all the way to top of Mt Lakeway (tested with my iPhone using AT&T service). I am able to use the Hiking Project app with live maps and GPS trail tracking 'online' without a hitch anywhere in this trail system.
