Indian Canyons is a natural area managed by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and requires a small fee for access.

Need to Know

The Indian Canyon area is managed by the Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians, who charge an entrance fee (currently $9) that contributes to the management of the trail area and is well worth the spend. Parking can get tight on weekends and holidays, but there are multiple overflow lots a short run from the main trailhead.

Runner Notes

This run starts at the Indian Canyon trading post and initially follows the Palm Canyon Trail. The loop can be run in either direction but is most enjoyable as recommended direction, connecting the Palm Canyon Trail to the Vandeventer Trail then descending the Fern Canyon trail. Once off the Palm Canyon Trail, you'll see very few people, even on a crowded day. Footing is packed dirt singletrack and flat sandy gravel in the washes.

Description

When combined with Vandeventer Trail, this is a beautiful loop. Start at the Indian Canyon trading post heading south on the Palm Canyon Trail, then head up and east on the Vandeventer Trail onto well-maintained, rolling singletrack through a desert plateau that turns north and back west to descend through the dry Fern Canyon wash and several small palm groves back to the trading post. The start and end of the trail feature 500 feet apiece of moderate climb and descent.

Flora & Fauna

Cactus, sage, and other desert plants abound. Watch for cactus encroaching on the trail — ouch! Saw lots of desert birds but none of the elusive resident mountain lions, coyotes, or bighorn sheep.
