Need to Know

It ain't cheap.

Anyone passing above the Plaza de Mulas must not only have a permit but must pass an examination by a medical team.

Description

This is the first part of the trail that you have to be sanctioned by a doctor to continue. Not only is the altitude going to increase precipitously, there are no open field to meander through. It's a slog.

Leaving Plaza de Mulas, head uphill, switchbacking along the way. The first way station you come to is Camp Canada. Some folks use this to avoid the raucous Plaza de Mulas or to just grab a little more altitude. After this, you pass the more diffuse and windy Camp Alaska. Continue up another mile through some more switchbacks, finally making it to a section that carves more gently up the mountain. Finally, you are at Nido de Condores (Condor Nest), which is a nicely protected campsite.
