Trail is heavily rerouted due to construction and maintenance. Access to trailhead adds about a mile each way on wide cross-country ski trails. Signage on ski trails can be confusing, but look for yellow circles nailed to trees, not yellow circles on posted signs.

Need to Know

The ledges are beautiful, but the drop is precipitous. Do not fall off the ledges.

The renovation of the Mount Van Hovenberg Outdoor Recreation facility is now complete as is the trail to the summit. The rebuilt trail is marvelous and an example of what we should hope will be the fate of all the eroded and damaged trails in the High Peaks region.

Description

The trail begins behind the new main lodge and is clearly marked with signs and yellow trail markers. The markers are no where needed on the trail because the the new, improved trail is so well made and obvious that it is nearly impossible to lose it. Just follow the stone stairs and crushed stone path to the summit ledges. The trail makes a sharp, hair pin turn to the right at roughly 1 mile and is about half way to the top. The grade is fairly sustained the entire length of the trail but is never really steep. The footsteps are always level as the trail crew essentially paved the entire way with flat, granite blocks. A very pleasant hike to be sure.

The improved trail is like this the entire length. Can't give the trail crew responsible for this enough credit.
