Description
This is a wonderful trail following Turret Creek to the tops of...well...Flat Tops. There are no classic mountain lakes, the waterfalls along the creek are mostly hidden and hard to appreciate, and the rock cliffs are not quite as glamorous as others in the area. If you are looking to get away though there are many other positives: the trail is a great way to gain elevation, there are lots of aspens on the lower half of the trail, and everything around you is still quite lovely.
As you ascend the trail from south to north the trail is initially doubletrack for the first half mile. After it becomes a singletrack, there will be two creek crossings. The first creek crossing is a little challenging to find the exact crossing and even more so in early season. The second has natural tree fall that makes for an easy crossing. There are no easily identifiable campsites until after the second creek crossing. Turret Meadows is the best of the early options, then there will be plenty on the upper benches, but not always right next to water if you are looking for big views.
The predominate use on the trail seems to be horse folks and the trail seems a little worse for the wear because of it, but overall the trail is in moderate shape.
