Not suitable for winter or when there is lots of snow due to avalanche risk. Portions of the trail may be blocked by avalanches into early summer.

Need to Know

The trailhead is easy to miss. Parking at the trailhead is very limited (1 or 2 cars max), there is a mail turnout about 100 yards down the highway with more parking space.

Description

The trail starts on the side of the highway, and switchbacks through spruce forest for the first mile, then begins to level out after leaving the trees and enters grass and scattered alders in a steep sided valley surrounded by +6,000 ft. mountains. The trail mostly follows glacial Victor Creek, which flows through a deep canyon, although there are a few good views of it.

The grass becomes chest-to-head high in late summer and the trail gets very overgrown, starting in late July according to the register. This route is incomplete due to the trail being too overgrown to follow, the trail continues for at least another mile further up the valley, with possible access to the glacier at the head, as well as access to the peak of Mt. Andy Simmons. The trail is infrequently used so you'll probably be the only one on it.

Flora & Fauna

Moose, bears, and mountain goats can be found here.
