Need to Know

Yellowhead Mountain Trail can be found at the end of Lucerne Station Road. Travel Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 16) to 1.0 mile east of Lucerne Campground, and turn north onto Lucerne Station Road. This is about 32 miles east of the Mt. Robson Provincial Park Visitor Center. Follow Lucerne Station Road for a little under a mile as it winds around to end at a parking area and the Yellowhead Mountain Trail trailhead.

Description

From the trailhead sign, cross the railroad tracks at the crossing marked by a stop sign. Go left on the gravel road after crossing the tracks and watch for a Yellowhead Mountain Trail sign on the right. Go right at this sign, onto the singletrack trail, into the forest.

Yellowhead Mountain Trail climbs continually to its end below sub-alpine meadows on the slopes of Tete Roche, the eastmost peak of Yellowhead Mountain. Most of this climb is in the fir forest, but there are some short open areas with great views. About 0.8 miles from the trailhead is wonderful viewpoint with a bench to rest on. Yellowhead Lake and surrounding mountains for miles can be seen from here. The Yellowhead Highway to Yellowhead Pass that crosses the Continental Divide can also be seen. Many people run just to this viewpoint.

After the viewpoint, Yellowhead Mountain Trail continues through the forest with a few short flat open areas where Yellowhead Mountain can be seen. Just before the end of the maintained trail at the 4.0 mile mark, the trail emerges from the forest into sub-alpine meadows dotted with firs, below the slopes of Tete Roche. Tete Roche, the easternmost peak of the many peaks that make up Yellowhead Mountain, is right there up close. Quite an impressive sight.
