This trail starts at the Kelsay Valley Campground and Trailhead and climbs gently to a junction with the Pacific Crest Trail at Windigo Pass. The trailhead is located along the Wild and Scenic North Umpqua River and the campground is designed to accommodate pack and saddle use as well as standard camping. Although primarily intended as an equestrian trail, the #1412 does afford runners and backpackers the means to access other trails in the area and also to form loops. It also provides access to the northern part of the Mount Thielsen Wilderness.

Due to the horse traffic, the lower parts of the #1412 can be soft and dusty, but runners should stick it out in anticipation of better trails ahead. About 0.3 miles from the trailhead, the #1412 reaches a junction with the Porcupine Connect Trail #1412A which can be used to access the North Umpqua Trail #1414.

The trail continues to climb gradually through the open forest crossing a couple of creeks. At about 1.5 miles from the trailhead, the #1412 reaches a junction with the Tenas Peak Trail #1445. From there, there are no more trail junctions on the Windigo Pass Trail as it continues easily on up to the head of the Bradley Creek drainage, swings east, parallels Forest Road 60 for awhile, and comes to an end at Forest Road 60-501 at Windigo Pass. This is a favorite PCT trail angel spot!
