Description
Stein Mountain Trail follows the ridge from Stein Lookout down to Sheep Creek Road #077. It is a narrow, old trail and can be tricky to spot at times.
It drops almost 2000 feet by the time it intersects the Big Silverlead Trail after two miles. The upper end of the trail is open ridgeline descending and views of the Salmon River country all around. A sharp eye will be able to pick out the Salmon River itself over 4500 feet below the lookout.
After about a mile, the trail leaves the ridge and sidehills through trees and sage. It meets the Big Silverlead Trail at a flat ridge. Stein Ridge Trail crosses the ridge and continues to side hill not too far below the ridgeline and not as steeply as above.
Further down, the trail re joins the spine of the ridge and even has some brief uphills before meeting Sheep Creek Road #077.
