Cross Route begins on the south side of Baldy Road, 0.8 miles from the end of pavement. The only idenftifying markers on the trail are brown Forest Service carsonite markers with a numerological designation of 528.1B.

From Baldy Road, travel south over a stream crossing and straight at a four-way intersection (carsontie marker identifies this as USFS road 538; however USFS mapping identifies this as 528.1 down and 528.2 up).

Contour for another 1,000 feet south at which point the trail begins to climb steeply and appears extremely rutted. A singletrack trail on the right side of the road is the northern end of Pinball Alley.
