There is a fee to enter the park. While no camping is allowed on the Gulf itself, there are many campsites along the way. You must check in and check out from the park as well.

Description

This trail begins after you have forded the river from the West Branch Pleasant River Parking Area, or if you are coming from the Pleasant River Tote Trail (Spot #3 on the trail map). This trail begins with a bronze plaque that is located on a large boulder to signify that the Gulf is on the National Natural Scenic Register.

The views on this trail begin only 0.1 miles into the trail with three falls. The most prominent and spectacular is Screw Auger Falls, which has a separate 200-foot lookout trail. As you continue along the trail, the general ascent begins. At 0.7 miles, you'll reach a side trail that leads off to Hammond Street Pitch. This is the steepest point in the gulf, with the stream being over 100 feet below.

At 0.9 miles, you'll reach a short junction with Pleasant River Tote Trail, Spot #4 on the trail map. From here, you'll continue on through the forest to reach a succession of beautiful waterfalls, including The Jaws, Buttermilk Falls, Billings Falls, and Stairs Falls, as well as a great area for swimming near the head of the gulf. Upon reaching the end of the trail at a junction with the Pleasant River Tote Trail and the Head of Gulf Trail, you can head right to follow the Pleasant River Tote Trail to return to your car.
