Need to Know

The Cabe Lands Access parking lot is primarily used for the Eno Quarry Trail. In warm weather, parking fills quickly due to Quarry swimmers. No restroom access. No food access. Trash and recycling bins available in the parking lot.

Runner Notes

The short steep hill where this trail joins the MST has lots of sharp quartz matrix in the trail, which can be hard on thin-soled shoes.

Description

This "social trail" (unmarked, unofficial) starts in the parking lot of the Cabe Lands Access. The trailhead is an abandoned road 30' to the right of the official Cabe Lands Trail. Travel a few hundred feet through the Cabe's Family Cemetery to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail: Segment 10 intersection. Turn right down the hill. Towards the bottom, the MTS turns right towards a footbridge. Bear to the left down a somewhat steep hill to the Eno River. Follow the trail along the river until it once again intersects the Mountains-to-Sea Trail: Segment 10 at the twin Boy Scout bridges. From there, turn left to return to the parking lot via the Cabe Lands Trail, or right along the MST to the Eno Quarry Trail.

At the end of this trail and up to the left of the twin bridges is the ruins of the old Cabe's Mill. The stone cellar still stands, and the head race and tail race are evident on the south side of Eno River along the MST. The hand-laid stonework on this mill are worth a closer look.

Flora & Fauna

Along the river you might see turtles sunning themselves on logs and rocks. Egrets and herons have also been seen on this trail.
