This trail is within the Kalmiopsis Wilderness and the usual federal wilderness area regulations and restrictions apply here. Practice Leave No Trace (LNT) backcountry skills and ethics. Camp 100 feet from fragile areas; bury human waste at least 200 feet from water, trails, and campsites. This trail is usually open all year but can be very hot in the summer.

Need to Know

This trail was largely destroyed by the 2002 Biscuit Fire and then damaged again by the 2018 Klondike Fire. It was cleared, rebuilt, and reopened in 2020.

Description

This trail is an almost direct path between the Illinois River at Pine Flat and Bald Mountain, former site of a fire lookout. It climbs relentlessly some 3,000 vertical feet from the Florence Creek confluence to the Illinois River Trail #1161 near Bald Mountain. There are no water sources along this trail and it can be oppressively hot in the summer months. In those months, the #1161 is a more gently graded and better shaded way to reach Bald Mountain.

This trail fell into disuse after it was damaged by the 2002 Biscuit Fire. It was reopened in 2020. Its greatest use seems to have been as part of a 20-mile lollipop loop from the Briggs Creek Trail to Bald Mountain - out on the #1161, down to Pine Flat on the Pine Flat Way Trail #1219, then up to Bald Mountain on the Florence Way Trail #1219A, and back to the trailhead on the #1161.
