A pleasant run along a high ridge to views from Lookout Mountain in Eastern Oregon.

Bruce Hope

Features Views · Wildflowers

This trail is on the Malheur National Forest. There are no permits required to use this trail. Dispersed camping is permitted but there is no water or other amenities at the Sunshine Flat Trailhead. Access to the trailhead may be blocked by snow between November and May.

Need to Know

This is also called the Rail Creek Trail #369. This is a shared use trail that is lightly used except during the big game hunting season. If you are running it during that season (September to November) be sure to wear a piece of blaze orange clothing.

Description

At the trailhead, an obvious doubletrack old road (Forest Road 918) continues straight ahead toward Sunshine Flat. The #369 trail, however, goes due east from the trailhead to the top of the ridge and then along it to Sunshine Flat. If the trail is hard to find, don't worry. Just follow the old road and you'll connect with the trail at Sunshine Flat. Because of shared use, this trail never becomes a narrow singletrack.

From Sunshine Flat, the trail turns to the south and follows the ridge toward Lookout Mountain. It starts out in forest but, farther along, does pass through some nice meadows, all of which are filled with many different kinds of wildflowers in season. There are occasional views along the trail south toward Glacier and Lookout Mountains. This is easy running through wide-open country with expansive views and fields of wildflowers.

Four miles from the trailhead, the Sunshine Flat Trail #369 ends at a junction with the Little Baldy Trail, which is now a faded doubletrack road. Turn northeast here and make the short climb up the ridge across open fields to more views from the summit of Lookout Mountain. Return the way you came.
