The race will start at the CT's Cave Branch Trailhead and follow 90%+ singletrack trail to finish at Cove Lake State Park. It is a challenging course with over 7,000 feet of elevation gain! This course crosses the high point of the Cumberland Trail, Cross Mountain, at over 3000 feet. Be prepare—the climb up Cross Mountain is steep and will be slow!
The Cumberland Trail 50k is a point-to-point trail race that begins at the Cave Branch Trailhead and proceeds northeast along the Cumberland Trail until arriving at Cove Lake State Park in Caryville, TN.
The actual distance is slightly less than a 50k, but the route will challenge even the experienced ultra-runner as it traverses more than 7,000 ft of gain over what is some of the wildest and most remote terrain in Tennessee.
Runners will be treated to miles of technical singletrack with unique rock formations, scenic vistas, seasonal mountain streams, and the chance of elk sightings. The course offers a multitude of challenging climbs, including Lawson and Anderson Mountains, with climbs of more than 1,250 ft and culminating with a 1,560 ft climb up Cross Mountain to the highest point on the Cumberland Trail.
The race concludes with an overall descent into a mountain valley with a relatively flat and runnable finish at picturesque Cove Lake State Park.
