Need to Know

While four-wheel drive is not necessary most of the year, the forest roads leading to Aeroplane Mesa campground (trailhead) are not maintained for low-clearance vehicles. Four wheel drive is recommended during winter months.

Description

This run will take you from the mesa with views for days, down into the canyon that carries the Middle Fork of the Gila River. While the first two-thirds of this run can be a considered intermediate, the descent to the river is difficult due to its steepness and loose rocks.

Don't forget to look for the old truck at the approximate 3-mile mark.
