The views atop Shortoff are phenomenal as well as the varying topography which is never the same between trails.
Features: River/Creek — Views
The trail starts off with a hike up Shortoff Mountain via the Wolf Pit Trail
which then merges into the northern section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail: Segment 4
at the summit of Shortoff. In order to get to the gorge, the trail forks into the cambric branch which takes you down a steep decline to the bottom of the Linville Gorge. In order to get to the Linville Gorge Trail
, a water crossing is needed. They say the "bridge is out" but after searching, no remnants of a bridge were to be found. The trail then follows the Linville Gorge Trail
south on the west side of the river for quite a ways until another river crossing is needed to take you back east in order to skirt the private property bounds in the shadow of Shortoff. The LGT ends at a rockface that offers a pretty steep climb up the face of a mountain ridge in order to meet back up with the Mountains-to-Sea Trail: Segment 4
which, when followed north, takes you back to Wolf Pit Trail
and the car.
