The perfect place to spend an afternoon hiking with the family while learning about the local environment

Filipe Silva

Overview

The trail runs through the Slatina river valley, a valuable natural area due to the extensive number of species that occupy it, among them 9 endangered and 15 potentially endangered. It also includes a little village called Slatinka.
Features: Birding — Fall Colors — River/Creek — Spring — Wildlife
Dogs: Leashed

Description

This trail goes through a variety of environments, including meadows, forests, river banks and even a small village, Slatinka. There are several information boards along the trail which give a more detailed insight into the different characteristics of each zone.

In this valley there have been identified more than 500 species of higher plants, 123 species of birds, 27 species of mammals, 8 species of reptiles, 9 species of amphibians, 33 species of fish, 207 species of beetles, 158 species of butterflies and 10 species of dragonflies.

The village, right in the middle of the trail, dates back 600 years and has retained its characteristics from the period after the second world war, unlike most other villages in the area. This is due to the fact that there is a plan to build a water dam since the 50s, which prompted the government to forbid any new constructions. This water dam has been opposed by the locals and several environmental organizations.

The path alternates between dirt roads, asphalt roads and a singletrack

Flora & Fauna

Deer, foxes and a multitude of bird and insect species are abundant in these woods, along a numerous amount of tree species such as oak, beech, maple, among others.
Other animal species might be spotted although they are quite rare, such as otters, bears, lynxes and wolves.
