A short hike along the shoreline of Rock Harbor that takes you to Three Mile Campground.

Justin R

Overview

This short, scenic trail takes hikers on a majority shoreline trail along Rock Harbor to Three Mile Campground, which is a great jumping off point for longer hikes on the island. There are a number of shoreline campsites available with beautiful views of the harbor, as well as huts for longer-distance backpackers.
Features: Fall Colors — Lake — Views — Wildlife
Dogs: No Dogs

Need to Know

There is some mild scrambling on the trail, which does get ambiguous at some points. Use your best judgment and limit going off trail in order to preserve plants and wildlife.

Description

This scenic trail is a great option for hikers looking for a short day hike or those looking to start a longer backcountry excursion on Isle Royale. Starting from the Rock Harbor Visitor Center, the trail is easy going and follows along the shores of Rock Harbor. You'll pass the Rock Harbor Campground near the start of the trail. From here, continue along the shoreline, winding in and out of the trees until you come to a junction with Suzy's Cave Trail. Take a right here to make a loop with the Tobin Harbor Trail to return to the visitor center if you are planning on a shorter loop. Past this trail junction, the trail continues to wind along the water's edge, where you'll eventually come to the Three Mile Campground. There are huts for lightweight backpackers going sans-tent, but if you're planning on pitching, find a site on the water's edge and take in sunset after exploring your surroundings.
