“An easy hike, part of Delaware Seashore State Park”
— Bob Collins
Closed during shotgun-deer-hunting season (although open on Sundays as there is no hunting in Delaware State Parks on Sundays). A park pass is required seasonally.
Features: Birding — Fall Colors — Wildlife
Excellent running loop is well packed, but careful of sweetgum balls.
Flats-a-pancake, this trail is a highly pleasant loop near Bethany Beach. Winds past various small, tidal ponds and has a nice vista on Beach Cove. A great walking trail late October until May; during the summer, take insect and tick precautions.
Parking at the the Rte 1 trailhead, the Fred Hudson Trail packed is stone-dust and very civilized. The Prickley Pear Trail and Cut-off is mowed grass that has developed a single packed center. Both are excellent footing.
Flora & Fauna
The area was tilled farm fields until the mid 1990's, and has succeeded into a combination of loblolly pine and scrub hardwood forests. Some of the more sandy areas are best described as savannah. Near the ponds and saltmarsh, look for numerous great blue herons. Insects and ticks are numerous during the warmer months.
