Update

The trail to Bicame waterfall is in a private area; you have to pay to get in but it is very worthwhile.

Description

The starting point for this trail is accessible with any vehicle year round. In the period of maximum drought (August / October), the small stream may be dry, making it possible to advance with car to reach the doorman, reducing your run by about 2 km. However, there is a steeper slope that requires some technique in order to be crossed by 4x2 vehicles. 4x4 vehicles and motorcycles can drive up to the gate any time of the year, without difficulty. (UPDATE: in February of 2017 the road was very bad and was definitely not passable by 4x2 vehicles, and even 4x4 vehicles may have some difficulty).

The route to Bicame follows part of the old Transamante road, which once made the connection between Santana do Riacho and Congonhas do Norte. Eventually, runners will come to a well signposted fork, and the trail leads to the waterfall on a well-marked trail with few chances of getting lost.

There are signs along the way. While the trail is a gradual climb on the way out, it isn't technical and most runners will have no problem with the incline. The point of greatest technical difficulty is the ascent to the top of the waterfall, but this is optional.

The ascent to the top of the waterfall begins in the vicinity of the well, by a kind of water path. On the way to the top, there are ruins of a bicame (a gutter where the water runs), which probably gave the place its name. Along the upper part of the Rio das Pedras, there are dozens of steps and small pools. The place is quite easy to explore, since the river is largely shallow.

On holiday weekends the trail can get busy, so it is important to start the run early so as not to have to wait at the gate. You can sleep in Lapinha da Serra the night before, preferably. On normal weekends, the crowds are smaller, making it a nice option for a day trip from Belo Horizonte.
