A steep climb up as an alternative to the Rinerhorn lift.

Description

This run is on a road, keep that in mind before you decide against taking the lift.

This trail is for:

  • Those who want a challenge.
  • Those purists who don't believe in lifts.
  • Those who can't afford the high lift prices in Switzerland.

It is a brutal four-mile long, 600 m (2000 ft) climb at 10% average grade from the Davos-Glaris station to the top of the mountain. Part of the trail is asphalted but the upper part gives way to gravel. The road passes mostly through farmland but short sections are through the forest.

As you near the top of the climb, you'll have great views of the valley below which offers an excuse to pull out the camera so you don't feel bad about taking a break from the climbing.

There's a restaurant at the top of the lift where you can get refreshments. From there, you've got two excellent options both of which form part of the Alps Trail Davos IMBA Epic. A left will take you on the Sertig to Rinehorn trail into the picturesque Sertigtal Valley on a very fun, decently technical descent (follow the route 647 Rinerhorn route). A right takes you on the Rinehorn to Monstein trail with its own technical singletrack segments which descend into the small village of Monstein with its own brewery (follow the route 335 Monstein route).

So you should do this climb once because you'll feel good for meeting the challenge, and/or because descents should be earned. For round two, take the Rinerhorn bubble lift. If you're staying in Davos, chances are your accommodation includes free use of the lifts for your person, but you'll have to buy a ticket for your bike.
