Popular route to the summit of Monadnock from Route 124 parking lot

Eric Plasse

Overview

One of the more popular hiking routes to the summit of Mount Monadnock
Features: Fall Colors — Views — Wildlife
Dogs: No Dogs

Need to Know

Much of the trail is in the shade. The rocks/boulders can be slippery. Hiking poles are a big help on this hike. The views from the top are spectacular on a clear day!

Description

This simple to follow route starts at the Old Halfway House parking lot on Route 124 in Jaffrey NH.

Start your journey using the Old Halfway House trail just above the gate at the end of the parking lot. The trail ascends moderately up a ridge then levels out. Follow the trail for approximately 1.1 to the junction of the Old Halfway House Trail and the Cart Path. Continue straight on the Old Halfway House trail for another .1 miles to the Old Halfway House clearing.

From the clearning, look for the White Arrow trail (marked with white arrows). This trail has many steep, rocky sections but is manageable. Rocky slabs may be very slippery when wet. At approximately 1.7 miles (from start), you'll pass by the Cross Amphitheatre Trail. Stay on the White Arrow trail as other trails merge onto the path for the final ascent to the summit.
