Description

This is a relatively easy use trail that connects the nearest paved parking lot to Sólheimajökull. This is a staging area for local glacier climbing guides as well as a popular tourist spot, so expect crowds... but don't be deterred by them if you want to visit. The scenery of both the nearby glacier, lake and mountains, and further vistas, will make you glad to be here.

Sólheimajökull is a receding glacier, so the approach and accessibility described here (accurate as of March 2017) may need to be updated regularly.

All glaciers have deadly beauty. While any runner can safely travel to the foot of the glacier, nobody should continue onto the snow or ice of the glacier without a guide, or personal experience with safe glacier travel. Thin snow hides ever changing crevasses, many of which could result in a gruesome, fatal fall.
