Overview

Access to Smith Fire Tower gives breathtaking views of the surrounding area. You'll find a beautiful forest surrounding the trail.

Description

The trail climbs steeply up Smith Mountain, where you'll do some moderate scrambling over rock outcrops to get to the summit. At the summit, you'll have access to the Fire Tower, providing panoramic views of the surrounding area. After visiting the tower, you'll make your descent back through pine and deciduous forest.

Flora & Fauna

Pine forest surrounds the trail. Recent wildfire has cleared most of the underbrush giving clear views. Look for fox, Great Blue Heron, and blue-billed ducks.

History & Background

The trail once provided access to an operating fire tower.
