Overview

This is a beautiful trail system with several possible routes, many of which are very lightly used, even when the rest of the park is crowded, especially the branches from the main Blevins Trail and the far eastern trails.

Need to Know

The Channel Trail can be really muddy and slippery if it has rained recently, or overgrown with tall plants in the spring. The washes can have water in them, but are usually just a lot of sand (think running on the beach). The Moon Rocks Trail is very popular with mountain bikers. Don't sneak up on horses.

Description

Parking is located at the Blevins Trailhead where the loop starts and ends. You can adjust this loop to your needs by adding or removing trails to create a loop ranging in distance from 3 miles to over 20 miles. This is my go-to loop for medium distance and includes parts of the Blevins, Moon Rock, Channel and Cat Peaks trails.

In this run, at about 3 miles, when I am good and warmed up, I cut back to Blevins from the Channel Trail using the Amigos Wash Trail. You can use the parallel Levee Trail instead of Channel if you prefer running on gravel path to dirt, or if the channel is too muddy–decide when you get to the junction, or on the fly. You can also use the parallel Noso Trail instead of the Amigos Wash Trail if you don't like running in washes: a lot of the time, these are ankle-deep sand. It is a good change of pace, I think.

Flora & Fauna

Beautiful blooming cactuses.

This is a shot showing my favorite spot on the Blevins Trail - it's colorful in spring and has a good view of Pass Mountain.

The Channel Trail offers a great view of the distant Superstition Mountains.

There's lots of cholla on the Moon Rock Trail. While they're not fun to run into, they're pretty when they bloom.

A confusing transition. Look for this sign to the southeast of the permanent toilets and continue on.
