Overview

Free wilderness permits and campfire permits are required to enter the Trinity Alps Wilderness.
This is a steep but rewarding run to a dramatic but less crowded alpine lake in the Trinity Alps.
Features: Lake — River/Creek — Swimming — Waterfall — Wildflowers
Dogs: Leashed

Need to Know

Early in the season, high water levels can make fording Stuart Fork to access the Alpine Lake Trail impossible.

Description

From the trailhead, follow an old road to the Trinity Alps Wilderness boundary at Cherry Flat. Climb gradually along the Stuart Fork of the Trinity River.

After four miles, the trail crosses Deep Creek over a bridge and then crosses Oak Flat.

At five miles, take the turnoff for the Alpine Lake Trail and ford Stuart Fork. At six miles, at the junction with the Bear Creek Trail, stay right.

Climb steeply through sunny chaparral and past a series of waterfalls to Alpine Lake. This is a great place to stop and spend the night if the round trip journey seems a bit too arduous.

Return the way you came.
