The Great Allegheny Passage is a rail-to-trail that connects Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, MD. The route also connects to the C&O Canal Towpath, which leads to Washington D.C. on an additional 184.5-mile route.
The path is comprised of crushed gravel with a few, short sections of pavement. It has a very manageable grade. As the trail continues further south, the grade increases slightly, reaching the high point of 2,605 ft just north of the border with Maryland, west of Wellersburg, PA.
There are a few bridge crossings, some of which are fairly high for visitors who are sensitive to heights. Additionally, there are bathrooms and water fountains found along the route. For more information, visit the official GAP Trail website
