A great run on the Badlands trails with wildlife and views of majestic rock formations.

Overview

This route is a mix of road and trail. Badlands National Park has a lot of explorable terrain but not many established trails. This route is a combination of one of the established trails and the Badlands Loop Road. It is a great example of running in the Badlands with great views of the rock formations.
Features: Views — Wildlife

Need to Know

If you choose to go off trail be a very competent compass and topo map navigator and have a handheld GPS with you.

Runner Notes

This is a great way to see the rock formations up close and get away from the tourist areas.

Description

The run is generally easy. There are not many technical areas, and it is a well-marked 13.1 mile loop. Start at the Door/Window Trail area on the Badlands Loop Road. Continue on the Castle Trail at the Fossil Exhibit Trailhead location. Repeat. This is the safest way to get a marathon in at Badlands National Park.

Flora & Fauna

Bighorn sheep, amazing rock formations.
