Need to Know

This route can be hot in the summer. Be prepared and bring plenty of sun protection and water.

Description

You start this loop at the Chantry Flats parking lot. First, descend on the Gabrielino Trail (NRT) which begins as a paved road and then winds along the bottom of Big Santa Anita Canyon past the rustic cabins. At the trail junction near Fern Lodge you take the upper spur of the Gabrielino Trail (NRT) above the creek, rejoining the lower spur at Falling Sign Junction.

You continue on passing the Cascade Picnic area and Spruce Grove campground to the intersection of the Sturtevant Trail. At the junction you bear right and continue on the Gabrielino Trail (NRT) until you come to Newcomb Pass. At Newcomb Pass, you head west and join the Rim Trail and make a gradual climb up the backside of Mt. Wilson.

Once at the top of Mt. Wilson, you cross the road, go up a paved path towards the restrooms and Cafe and then proceed down to the western edge of the large parking area to pick up the Mount Wilson Trail. You take the Mount Wilson Trail until it merges with the Mt Wilson Toll Road. You continue on the old toll road until you come to the point where the Mt. Wilson Trail picks up again and heads down the side of the hill.

After a long descent, you come to a clearing and a bench where the Mount Wilson Trail goes down into Little Santa Anita Canyon. You want to continue on the Upper Winter Creek Trail which heads down towards Hogees Trail camp at the bottom of the hill. At the next trail Junction you take the Upper Winter Creek Trail and head uphill for .3 miles to where the trail levels off and begins its gradual descent back to Chantry Flats where you began.
