The official Bellagio Sky Race route.

Rubens Ballabio

Overview

This route allows runners to start from the beautiful village of Bellagio (Como Lake) and climb to the top of "Lario Triangle" mountain, Monte San Primo. On top of that summit, runners can admire the majesty of Como Lake which is absolutely fantastic! The first 12 kms (Bellagio - San Primo summit) are quite difficult, especially the last 2 kms (40% - 45%). The last 17 kms are almost totally downhill, the most of them inside beautiful forests (beech).

Description

Bellagio Sky Race runs entirely on the mountains surrounding a beautiful promontory right in the middle of Lake Como.

The start of the race is located at Bellagio Lake promenade at 221m altitude above sea level. After a 800-meter long segment of asphalted road, you'll arrive at Loppia and begin ascending. After having passed through green boulevard in front of Villa Giulia for 200 m, runners will enter a short staircase on the right which brings them to Suira locality (at 1.5 km), coming back again on asphalted roads. After 500 m, at Mulini del Perlo fraction, you'll descend for a while and on the left, you'll enter the mule track that becomes a walkable dirt patch, which can be driven with a jeep, till reaching Brogno locality at 550 meters above sea level (a stop with water and mineral salts is available).

The path begins climbing through the woods for 2.5 km, bringing you to Belvedere Nuvolone (980 meters above sea level). At this point
of the route, a beautiful view above Bellagio promontory and Retiche Alps opens to the eyes rewarding runners for the fatigue from the climb. Continue for a short segment and then descend again to 870 meters above sea level. In this short segment, there is a technical segment on limestones. At the end of this segment, continue for 500 meters till reaching Roccolo locality where there will be a refreshment with hot tea, mineral salts, water, fruits, sweeties, and coke.

At this point, runners will ascend steadily through a path in the woods, that becomes a beech wood and in 3 km it brings us at Rifugio Martina (1,220 meters above sea level) and refreshment. Here begins the harder ascending segment, that brings you to the top of Mount San primo (1,680 meters above sea level), Cima Coppi. This point is 12 km on the route. Descend from the top of the mountain for around 80 meters on a technical, pebbly path, where you'll need to pay attention. After this, you'll head on a 2 km section on the ridge along pasture, that will bring you to the Alpe di Spessola. This is a very scenic segment where it is possible to look north (at your left) to see the Bellagio promontory now far and Retiche Alps mountain chain. Straight (east) is Northern Grigna mountain in all its beauty. South you can see all of Milan hinterland. The path along the ridge is technically easy and it doesn't display dangers.

From Alpe di Spessola, the trail begins descending steadily along a pasture path that will become a path with technical segments. At Piano Rancio locality, you'll come to a main road crossing and, following indications given by volunteers, runners will come back again onto path to reach Campo locality and then Civenna.

Next descend for 500 meters through Civenna town, back onto a varied path full of rhythm changes for 5 km while crossing localities of Civenna2, Limontasca, Chevrio, and passing through along Baita Belvedere at 580 meters above sea level (at km 23 of the race). Finally you'll see and it seems you could touch it, Bellagio promontory.

Continue for 500 meters on a dirt path and on the right, access a path that brings you in a short time to Visgnola fraction. After a short segment (200 meters) of main asphalted road, runners will come back again into Suira fraction. Descend the staircase called derta till Guggiate and then arrive in Loppia where you'll enter Villa Melzi gardens park where a marvelous graveled road though the park that will lead to the Bellagio promenade.
