Discrete Peak Series

Overview

Stop #3 of the Discrete Peak Series is set on majestic Mount Crested Butte in Crested Butte, Colorado. The course begins and ends at the base of Mount Crested Butte. Runners will enjoy a steady elevation gain of ~1600 feet over ~4 miles. The course is ~7.5 miles total in length.

The initial stretch of the course meanders through wildflower fields, aspen groves, and dark pine forests. The crest of the trail is at the top of the Red Lady Ski Lift. On the descent, runners will again enjoy the unique and diverse flora of Mount Crested Butte. Throughout the race, runners will take in breathtaking views of the Elk Mountain Range. Upon finishing Stop #3 of the Discrete Peak Series, runners will find themselves at the base of Butte 66 Restaurant and Bar, where the awards ceremony and giveaways will commence.

The Discrete Peak Series encourages runners to stick around and enjoy many of the attractions at Mount Crested Butte. A particularly enjoyable event, the annual Mount Crested Butte Chile Cook-off and Beer Festival, is also taking place at the base on September 12, 2015, just as runners will be finishing Stop #3 of the Discrete Peak Series!

Description

The course begins at the base of Mount Crested Butte. Runners will convene at the starting line, located in the main village square, just outside of Flatiron Sports. From there, runners will race to the bottom of the Silver Queen Ski Lift, where they will begin running up the singletrack, Lower Westside Trail. Through the wildflowers, aspens, and dark timber, runners will enjoy beautiful views of Wetstone Mountain, Gothic Mountain, and Snodgrass Mountain until they meet up with the Upper Westside Trail.

Once on the Upper Westside Trail, runners continue to the top of the Red Lady Ski Lift. From the top of the Red Lady Ski Lift, runners will link up with the Primer Trail. From the Primer Trail, runners will head east on the Painter Boy Trail until they cross under the Prospector Lift.

The home stretch of the course showcases why Crested Butte is the wildflower capital of Colorado. After runners cross under the Prospector Lift, they will then enjoy a moderate home-stretch on the Columbine Trail until they connect with the Up and Away Trail to the finish line at the base area.
