Runner Notes

This is a rugged trail covering many precipitous ledges and creek crossings.

Description

Starting (from your watercraft) at the confluence of the Colorado River and Havasu Creek, scramble over the white "bathtub ring" and up the large limestone ledges. The trail begins on the south/west bank of the creek and soon crosses over. (as always, only cross if it is safe to do so) Because of all the calcium carbonate dissolved in the water, limestone is deposited, reflecting sunlight and giving the creek its wonderfully bright blue-green color. The first mile of trail is relatively easy going, with gradual elevation gain. There is one steep climb up and over a steep section of canyon wall, but before long, you're back to water level and running over rolling terrain.

There are trees and brushy shrubs along the bottom of the canyon so shade is available in many places. At some points, the canyon narrows to provide additional shade. There are numerous creek crossings (sometimes marked by rock cairns) and several cliffs and ledges to negotiate- sometimes with stairs, sometimes not. Finally, the trail ends at the amazingly tiered Beaver Falls. This is a wonderful place for a swim and a doze under the trees. Visit the Green Room if you dare!
