Deer Grove Forest Preserve

Overview

Located in Palatine, Deer Grove was the first preserve acquired by the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Since 1916, it has grown to 1,800 acres that include trails, a sledding hill, a model airplane field, Deer Grove Lake and the newly-revitalized Camp Reinberg.

A vast, looping trail system makes it easy to access the preserve's diverse habitats. Four miles of paved trails and 10 miles of unpaved trails create ample space for extended runs or hikes. A paved 2.8-mile loop in the eastern portion of the preserve connects to a 1.2-mile segment at the western edge. Additional unpaved trails, including a 5.4-mile loop and a 2.6-mile loop, run throughout. Cyclists can access Deer Grove Trail at West and East parking lots, and equestrian trailer parking is available at Deer Grove West.

Deer Grove is home to diverse habitat. Volunteers have restored large swaths of upland forest, wetlands, ravines, savannas and prairies. Throughout the preserve, numerous wetlands attract an interesting variety of wildlife.

The Deer Grove trail system offers plenty of opportunities to get out and connect with nature, whether for an entire day or just an hour.
