Geological Significance
This trail is in Death Valley National Park and an entry fee is required. The informal trailhead for this run is at or near the day use area in the Texas Springs Campground. Do not park in any of the campsites. There are toilets and water at the campground, which is closed during the summer months.
Need to Know
There is no formal trailhead for this run but you can start from the day use area in the Texas Springs Campground. There isn't room there for more than 2-3 vehicles but there's a little more parking at a wide spot along the road about 200 feet to the northwest. The best time to do this run is between November and April, as it's too hot to do during the summer months. The campground is also closed during those months, forcing you to start from Highway 190 and add 1.4 HOT miles to the run.
Description
Follow the
Funeral Slot Canyon route from Texas Springs Campground for 3.5 miles to a fork in the main canyon (marked with a large white boulder). Taking the right fork here will lead you to the truly deep and narrow section that some guidebooks call The Slot. This spur continues straight ahead up the main canyon.
There are a few narrow and interesting sections along here but none quite as nice as those in the The Slot. About a 0.5 miles up-canyon from the fork to The Slot, you come to a glass-smooth 15-foot fall which can be by-passed up a steep gully on the right. Doing so requires climbing skills that go beyond running. The canyon continues on above the fall, but starts to widen, so you're not missing any narrows by making this the turn-around point for your run.
