Overview

If you are looking for a shorter run that still captures the iconic feel of the Appalachian Trail without all the logistical wrangling, a run to Long Creek Falls should do the trick. At 2-miles round-trip, this short out-and-back run, heads along a scenic section of the AT before ending at a lovely waterfall.

Need to Know

The rocks around the falls and creek can be wet and slippery. Use caution when exploring the area.

Description

Starting from the Three Forks trailhead, pick up the trail on the northeast side of Noontoola Road. The trail you'll be running on is part of two long distance trails--the Appalachian Trail and the Benton MacKaye Trail. Both trails are marked by white blazes—the AT by a rectangle blaze and the BMT by a diamond blaze.

The first part of the run follows along scenic Long Creek. There are several smaller cascades and scenic side trails that lead to the creek. The woods are lovely year-round, and if you can time your visit to the rhododendron bloom or the changing fall colors in autumn, you are in for an extra treat.

You'll eventually reach a short spur trail that leads to Long Creek Falls. The double-tiered cascade is a scenic spot to sit, relax, and enjoy a snack before heading back the way you came.

Flora & Fauna

Pine, mountain laurel, rhododendron. Black bears.
