Overview
The scenery in this area is simply epic. High alpine desert surrounded by the Chilean Andes to the west, and bracketed by Cachi Mountain to the north and east.
Need to Know
Contact Bodega Taquil about lodging availability - not a regular business. Estancia Colome operates a wonderful hotel, wine production tours and tasting, and restaurants. This can be booked via online contacts.
Carry plenty of water, Not necessarily available along the way.
Description
This is an easy link between two famous wineries. The road out of Taquil is steep and treacherous in a car or truck but much easier on foot or horseback.
Departing the Emerald Valley you gain most of your vertical in the first mile or so, then descend into a great valley flanked by mountains. Along the road there are fascinating geological points, a small town and school where the outback people are always excited to see visitors. Also along the way is Bodega Humanao, and finally arriving at the 4/5 star Colome bodega and estancia.
Each of the wineries with their irrigation are stark contrasts to the high alpine desert.
We did this as part of a four-day five-night horseback ride.
History & Background
Each of the wineries have extensive histories dating back to and beyond land grants directly to the Spanish. First nations people are largely still well represented.
