Description

This loop begins at Elk Butte Spring, and goes up a nice, gradual road. The route has signs with a figure skiing to mark the cross-country skiing trail that locals like to use.

After about a mile and a half, there is a large sign with a map indicating that the trail heads south, and climbs up a canyon. This section may be overgrown in the summer time. If you don't want to bushwhack, you can go another half mile along the road and opt to ascend up an old jeep trail. This will probably add another mile to your run, but it might be worth it. The trail rises to a saddle with nice views before dropping back down to Elk Butte Spring and the parking area.

Flora & Fauna

Aspens, pines, sagebrush, elk, moose, deer, hawks, and vultures live in this area.

The trail has some deadfall in places, but most of it is in really good shape. Two small stream crossings right now. 0.8mi
