Description

The Springfield Bog was discovered in the 1970s by a town forester who was showing a new biology teacher around the town-owned land. When he spotted some high-bush blueberry bushes and moved in for a closer look, he discovered a kettle hole bog, full of rare pitcher plants and other bog plants. The Ascutney Mountain Audubon Society worked hard for many years to preserve the site from harmful uses, and still monitors the area today. Because the trail signs had a tendency to disappear, Ascutney Mountain Audubon had a large peice of granite engraved with the simple name of the trail, "Bog".
