Description

While not quite as spectacular as Big Schloss, Tibbet Knob rewards those who reach its summit with a spectacular, 270-degree panoramic view of Wolf Gap and Wardensville, WV. The first two-thrids of the climb are much less rocky than other trails in the surrounding area, however the trail makes up for it with steep pitches to reach the summit.

Starting at the Wolf Gap campground, head south gradually uphill following yellow blazes through a primitive campground. The trail will steeply increase upwards until it reaches the first ridge, about 0.5 miles in. Roll along the ridge and enjoy views of the Massanutten Mountain to the east.

The trail will descend the next 0.5 miles into West Virginia, then upwards along narrow, steep singletrack. Stay left at the switchback as the trail increases in steepness but is relatively non-technical. Just when you think it couldn't get any steeper, it does.

After this first pitch, pick your way through the rocks uphill again to the second pitch (this one slightly longer and chunkier). If you've made it this far, your reward is near. One more short push and you'll reach the semi-treed summit and enjoy a spectacular panorama. The trail continues south through an awesome summit campsite, then descends more gradually before ending at a small trailhead/parking lot on Judge Rye Road.
