Runner Notes

There are several small roots and a few fallen trees to watch out for while on trail. The lower sections can be muddy, so keep your wits about you.

Description

This is one of five trails at Heritage Park. This trail begins at the Stubnitz Environmental Education Center and quickly drops into the lower elevations of the park. In the spring, there can be some wet/soft spots along the trail, but just make sure you wear good shoes. About halfway through the trail, there is a floating, single-wide boardwalk that takes you right through a marshy area. I saw cattails, skunk cabbage, and lots of other wetland plants.

After the boardwalk, the trail climbs back uphill pretty quickly and wanders around a bit at the top of the hill. This hill is at the level of most of the rest of the park, so it feels a bit like you are running along the edge of a drop. The trail in this area is pretty sandy, so there's not a lot of worry about mud and standing water. After a couple of double-backs, the trail goes into the level woodlot and back to the parking lot where you started.

This trail also coincides with sections of the Yellow Trail and Orange Trail for several hundred yards, so feel free to detour onto an adjacent trail and explore the area!

Flora & Fauna

Cherry, oak, and maple trees command the canopy in this area, while wetland plants like skunk cabbage and cattails occupy the understory. In the way of fauna, there's a good chance you'll see some small reptiles, lots of deer tracks, assorted small mammals, and songbirds.

Watch out for the sand at the bottom of this hill when it's dry.
